Public Speaking Workshop

Johnny Leifheit and Tim Elliott will join us this week to teach Public Speaking Workshops on Wednesday (1st – 4th grades) and Thursday (5th – 7th grades) Both young men have staffed TeenPact, an excellent government and leadership program that seeks to “turn students into statesmen”; each one of them has taught public speaking to students 8 – 18 years old in this program. We’re grateful that they have time to teach these workshops because Johnny is currently traveling around the country interning with TeenPact, and Tim is scheduled to leave for Scotland this Sunday to study at the University of St. Andrews.

Upcoming Chapel Speakers

I am glad to inform you that we have some excellent chapel speakers lined-up for the rest of January and February.  Students should come in chapel clothes on the days we have chapel.

Ben Wu (pictured with his wife, Kara) will be speaking this Wednesday, January 18th.  Ben is a faithful member of the Congregational Church in Limington (along with Mr. Weirick!).  Recent Missionary chapel speakers, the Raychards, are Ben’s Father-in-law and Mother-in-law!

Ira Hall will be presenting a chapel message on February 8th.  Ira is the pastor of Bean’s Corner Baptist Church in Jay, ME.  We are thankful to have him return to OVCS as a well loved chapel speaker!

Jonathan Marshall will be speaking on February 15th.  Mr. Marshall is a former OVCS teacher and a dear friend to OVCS.  He is pastor of White Rock Free Baptist church in Gorham, ME.

Unless something changes, the following dates will be “non-chapel chapel” days:  January 25th, February 1st, Februray 22nd (vacation), and February 29th.

Breakfast for Lunch!

Praise God for the excellent hot lunch program at OVCS!  This week nearly 20 kids (and a few fortunate adults) enjoyed “breakfast” for lunch.  Thanks Erica and Catherine for your faithfulness to making hot lunch available, affordable, and special!

Authentic Thanksgiving

The Authentic Thanksgiving was a hit!  The weather was perfect, the involvement from so many families was an encouragement, and the joy experienced by the kids was heartwarming.  Pics have been posted under “pictures” and “Authentic Thanksgiving 2011.”  Enjoy!

Upcoming Events

Authentic Thanksgiving is THIS WEDNESDAY!  Things are coming together for what will certainly prove to be a fantastic day.  Reminder:  Help your children come dressed for the time period.  We are all looking forward to presentations, doing crafts and activities, and enjoying a feast together.  The K-2 ministry will be collecting food for their next trip to the shelter, so bring something to donate!

Parent Teacher Conferences are this week.  Teachers are looking forward to meeting with parents and discussing the progress that is being made in their classrooms.

Apple Pies — Reminder:  Apple Pies are on sale now!  Purchasing a pie from the PTF could save you time and energy during this busy time of year!

Just a reminder that next week is Thanskgiving, which means we have a short week of school.  Students will have a half day on Wednesday, leading into a long weekend for the holiday.  Reminder: Family and friends may love to purchase a wreath to benefit the school.  Bring wreath cards with you to your festivities!

Fundraising Prize Winners!

What a pleasure it was today to recognize those students who made particularly significant fundraising accomplishments!  Prizes included train tickets to Boston, snow tubing and lift tickets, and tickets to York Wild Kingdom.  Students meeting certain checkpoints received Jeans Day certificates.

Fall Work-a-thon 2011

Once again, teams of students, staff, and parents went out into the local community to help those in need.  We raked leaves, mostly.  This year we finished early at our planned worksites and were able to surprise one dear lady and pick apples at Pulsifer’s for local food pantries!  Here are a few pics.
