Work-a-Thon – where OVCS goes into the local community offering our services to those in need.
Fall is in the air, which means leaves are on the ground… So, it’s that time of year, again, when the entire school, grades PreK – 12, pull together to do yard work and fall clean-up for those in need.
This year’s Work-a-Thon is scheduled for Friday, November 1st.
Rain Date is Friday, November 8th.
Ministry and Community Service
The folks we visit are widows, elderly, disabled, or experiencing a particular season of loss or physical challenge. Many of these folks are connected to families in our school community or have a long history of involvement with this ministry.
This single day of work is a small way to honor these community members and show them the love of Christ. Some folks only need us for a given year, while others remain part of our annual plan because their needs only increase as time goes on.
And we cannot stress enough, there is no cost to those who are having work teams come to their home.
Of course, the lessons this event teaches our children (and each of us) is of great value. Work-a-Thon is an excellent opportunity to put feet to our faith and show the love of Christ by our actions. Be blessed as you consider how much these families are helped.
Work Day
We work in teams of various ages and abilities to help with yard work such as, raking leaves, stacking firewood, clean up, and winter preparations.
Last year, we put together 9 teams that visited 16 job sites!
This year we are planning 7 teams with 2 adults per team, to cover 15 job sites. Teams work from 8:30am to 2:30pm, with ample lunch and snack breaks, so please plan accordingly. Students should wear work clothes and work gloves, and we recommend dressing in layers this time of year. If possible, students should plan to bring a well-marked rake.
Fundraising
This event serves as a pledge-drive fundraiser for our school, but all the services are FREE to those we help. Leading up to the event, students raise pledges from friends and families who support our efforts, and those funds benefit the programming at our school.
The goal for each OVCS Family is $650 in pledges. Many folks seek pledges through social media, phone calling, letter writing, and face-to-face. If we each do our part, then we will meet our school-wide fundraising goal of $20,150.
Note: PreK families are not required to do fundraising. The PreK students will form a team and help around the school on the day of the event!
Fun & Entertainment
Throughout the pledge-drive, there are incentives and prizes for individual students and classes reaching certain checkpoints and goals. In recent years some of the prizes included but were not limited to, a trip for four to Boston aboard the Downeaster train, York’s Wild Kingdom tickets for four, and snow tubing tickets at Sea Coast Fun Park.
In addition, for every $200.00 that each child receives in pledges they will receive a free jeans day pass. If we make our goal of $20,150, EVERYONE will receive a week of free jeans days.
So, please set your sites on helping us to meet this year’s goal and watch our Facebook page for updates along the way.
You Can Help Us Reach Our Goal!
This win-win-win fundraising event is critical to our school funding. We only have two major fundraising efforts each year, this Fall Work-a-Thon and our Spring Auction.
Funds from this event are critical in helping our school community in a variety of ways, from keeping tuition rates reasonable to needed building upgrades.
OVCS is a non-denominational private Christian school. We operate solely on tuition and contributions, and do not receive any federal or state funds. We are a 501c(3), therefore all donations are tax deductible.
If you know someone in need or would like to contribute to our 2024 Work-a-Thon (which blesses both the school and the community), please contact us.
